Southford Falls State Park Oxford, CT
This past week, I have found two small Connecticut state parks I have never visited. Wow! What a surprise!
Southford Falls in Oxford (the parking lot is in Southbury) was an amazing find! I did a google search for parks near my nephew’s and thought - ‘this works since I only have an hour’. I was able to not just surround myself with beautiful woods, falling trees and running water, but I also got some amazing photos.
It was surprisingly busy for a Thursday, autumn afternoon. It’s a small park with a number of options. A few people were fishing. Many were taking family photos in addition to a professional photo shoot. There were some kids in Halloween costumes - I didn’t stay long enough to see if there was a small party. Most of us were ambling up and down the short trail to get a glimpse of the waterfalls or heading to the longer walk up to a fire tower.
The waterfall was beautiful despite Connecticut’s 2020 draught. I am eagerly anticipating another visit because I only saw a quarter of its majesty. The falls are part of Eight Mile Brook and were used to power industrial mills from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century.
One would like to assume the quaint covered bridge is original; however, it is a reproduction of an 1804 design built in 1972. Although some of my readers may think that is still antique, I can assure you, it is not. The bridge provides a walkway over the brook with ample windows from which to view the falls.
There is a larger trail and a fire tower which I did not have time for on this trip. I will definitely update when I go back.
