Bellingrath Gardens Theodore, Alabama

Bellingrath Gardens is one of my most favorite places. Just outside of Mobile, Alabama, is the tiny town of Theodore. After a few well marked turns, you drive down a southern country road. The road doesn’t give you a clue at all to the majesty of Bellingrath. As you turn into the parking lot, you’re given hints, but the majesty is still securely hidden behind the welcome center.

Once you purchase tickets, you meander into gardens that take your breath away. The first major garden is the Rose Garden, which always has beautiful flowers. Concentric circles full of roses in every color surround a stunning water fountain. Arched benches provide a place to sit while pondering the eclectic array of roses.

Make time for the house tour at least once. The 10, 500 square foot home is stunning from top to bottom. The curators always conduct a knowledgeable and entertaining presentation as they guide you through the home.

I highly suggest going during azalea season your first time. Yes, I said your first time, because once you see the beauty, you will continue to return regardless of the season. I have been a dozen times, from early spring through Christmas. Each season brings it’s own blooms and delights.

Spring provides avenues of azalea lined pathways. Pink, white, purple blooms guide you to the Great Lawn alongside the magnificent Bellingrath Home. Colorful plantings and containers are interspersed with water fountains and features. Keep following the paths to Mirror Lake, the Japanese Garden, and many more.

Summer, although hot and steamy, provides paths of hydrangeas, crepe myrtle, and hibiscus. Taking the river boat cruise allows for a bit of a breeze and a fascinating explanation of the intercoastal waterway.

Winter is my other favorite time to visit, but rather than for the gardens, the Magic Christmas in Lights is delightful. I have attended this a number of times with my mother. All of the pathways are bedecked in shimmering lights. Unlike Christmas light displays in your car, you are free to walk at your own pace, enjoy hot chocolate and treats, and take as many photographs as you would like. You can even circle back to specific displays.

Important to note, there is a no pet policy. There is a Pet Motel with kennels for your pet, as of this writing, free of charge.

Photo Ops: 10/10 (*Check the Bellingrath Gardens Website for professional photography requirements.)

Flower Bathing: 10/10

Picnic Spot: 1/10 (guests are not allowed to bring food or drink into the gardens, however, there are picnic areas by the parking lot). I have eaten at the cafe and have been pleased by the choices available.
